Teeth Whitening Story: Does it Work?

“Does it work?”

What are the best Teeth Whitening products?

I asked that very same question when I first heard about Teeth Whitening. That was way back in the mid-90′s, when Teeth Whitening was in its infancy. I think it was called Smile Bleaching at the time.

As a Toronto Cosmetic Dentist, I was excited to see something come along that was so simple and could improve smiles for so many people. I was eager to find out for myself if Teeth Whitening really worked.

There was no way I was ready to recommend it to my patients if I wasn’t sure it would do the trick. So I ordered in a Whitening kit from California – Ground Zero for teeth whitening – and used myself as a guinea pig.

I became my first test patient for Teeth Whitening in my office.

Toronto Cosmetic Dentist asks, “Does Teeth Whitening Work?”

The great news… it worked like a charm! I was amazed how easy and effective it was. My teeth practically glowed – like Ross’s teeth on that episode of Friends.

I went to a Dental Convention a few weeks after whitening my teeth. I ran into some classmates and being dentists, they immediately noticed how much whiter my teeth were.

The funny thing is, I could see the light bulb go off for some of my classmates, but not for others. Those that got it were immediately excited by the potential it could offer the patients back in their own dental practices. The ones who didn’t get it just thought it was just WRONG to alter the natural color of teeth.

That’s a big clue. Not every dentist is destined to be a Cosmetic Dentist.

I must say, using the product was a bit messy back then. The formulas were syrupy rather than the convenient thicker gels we have now.

I also noticed how sensitive my teeth became. Thankfully modern formulas also address that with effective desensitizing agents added to the formula.

So yes, I was completely sold on the idea of Teeth Whitening.  I immediately began encouraging my patients to try it out, using my own smile as a demonstration.

BEST Teeth Whitening Products…

As a Toronto Cosmetic Dentist, I was an early adopter of Teeth Whitening. For many years I was amongst the leading providers across Canada. I had so many patients whitening their teeth and so many great results.

Eventually things slowed down, not because I was any less enthusiastic about Teeth Whitening, but because most of my patients already have had Teeth Whitening.

So yes, Teeth Whitening definitely works!

Of course some ways work much better than others. So the next question becomes,  “What are the BEST teeth whitening products and options?”

In those early days, there were very few Teeth Whitening products to choose from. Before long there came a flood of products and options all claiming to be the latest, greatest, and BEST Teeth Whitening products available.

The best teeth whitening products of that time couldn’t hold a candle to the best products available today. Yet I also see far more false claims and scams nowadays. Teeth Whitening products and options have become very confusing for consumers. This Teeth Whitening Guide can help you make sense of your options.

I’ll cover more about each option in my upcoming posts. Stay tuned.

I love a whiter smile! On a lot of makeover shows, I’ve noticed that there has been a huge focus on whitening teeth, as in those shows, they mention that whiter teeth takes years off of your overall appearance. This being said, I want to keep my bright smile for life!

Hi Roxy. A whiter smile is the ultimate accessory. It always helps you look your best. And now that you have a whiter smile, would you ever want to go back to dingy?

The value of a great smile seems so obvious, but some people just don’t get it. Men in particular are often oblivious to how their smile looks.

Great post Dr. Bulger! I think teeth whitening is a very hot topic in dentistry these days. Many people notice someones smile as soon as they meet them, so for many people it is important to have the best possible smile. I know as a hygienist I love keeping my teeth and gums looking their best, and whitening is one of the ways to do it :)

Hi Denise. Yes, you would think everyone in our field would get with it and at least whiten their teeth. Sadly no. Nothing worse than a dentist with a dingy smile. What message does that send?
