Smile Makeovers: Overdoing Knowledge of Cosmetic Dentistry

by Joe Bulger DDS

In my last post I explained the 4 criteria of an ideal candidate for a Smile Makeover

Transform your smile with cosmetic dentistry

Transform your smile and enjoy the adventure.

  1. Need in mouth.
  2. Knowledge in brain.
  3. Desire in heart.
  4. Money in hand.

Which do you think is the most important? Which would be the least?

Well, if anyone of those four criteria was less important, I believe it would be knowledge.

Don’t get me wrong. I need to know a LOT about the subject if I’m going to call myself a Toronto Cosmetic Dentist. If you came to see me as a patient, you won’t be doing the actual dentistry. That’s my job and that means you don’t have to know nearly as much about Cosmetic Dentistry or Smile Makeovers.

On the other hand, it doesn’t hurt to know more. Better to make darned sure you choose a dentist who knows their stuff. And what better way than to arm yourself with a decent amount of knowledge. That way you don’t get burned by some poser dentist and end up with a mouth full of shoddy work!

Here’s the funny thing. Most dentists overdo the knowledge aspect when talking to patients. They love demonstrating how smart they are. They continually overplay that knowledge card.

Given a chance, these dentists will lecture you on and on. Perhaps in the hopes that filling you with enough knowledge of Cosmetic Dentistry will somehow make you WANT that dental procedure.

It doesn’t work that way. Knowledge is not the key factor.

Information and facts don’t inspire you to act. You’re bombarded with information and sales pitches everywhere you look. The last thing you need is another lecture.

You need more inspiration and less information.

Is a Smile Makeover right for you?

You need someone who will help you cut through the clutter of information. Someone who can serve as your Trusted Advisor and guide you forward in the right direction.

Here’s the thing. If you don’t 1) the feel the pain of where you are now, 2) the fear of what may come if you don’t take action, and 3) the excitement of the possibilities, why would you bother to do anything?

Part of inspiring you to take action is making those emotional connections clear for you. There has to be emotional relevance attached to the outcome.

Cosmetic Dentistry is Leadership

My job as a Toronto Cosmetic Dentist isn’t just to repair broken teeth, it’s to LEAD you towards health and help you explore the possibilities. As your Trusted Advisor, I help you connect the dots so you can make the right calls on health and beauty.

You’ll never stumble blindly towards health and beauty. It takes organized effort.

Leadership is about making positive changes. Isn’t that what Cosmetic Dentistry and Smile Makeovers are all about?

The key is making positive changes with your best interests at heart. Cosmetic Dentistry sometimes gets a bad name because some dentists will push Extreme Smile Makeovers for maximum profit and gain. That’s not leadership, that’s exploitation.

My advice? Find a Cosmetic Dentist deserving of your trust.

Cosmetic dentistry is increasingly popular in the United States, parallel to the surge in other cosmetic procedures that improve the appearance. The smile is usually the first noticeable feature on a person, and many Americans strive to achieve a perfect smile with perfect (or near perfect) teeth. Thanks to advances in cosmetic dentistry, anyone with the right amount of money can achieve such a smile in a short amount of time, no matter what the original dental condition.

I definitely agree and you’re right Dr. Milica, it truly takes an artist to create a beautiful smile. No everyone have the talent/skill to do it.

Very nice article on the various values related to cosmetic dentistry. Each patient’s smile should be individually designed so they don’t look fake. As you point out, some may try to push the extreme makeover just for the money. We try to give the patient a nice smile and work within their budget, which means that we may do various techniques and not always just a large set of porcelain veneers. Because we have an onsite porcelain artist, we can do beautiful single anterior veneers or we may do bonding rather than veneers.

Your patient in the photo above has a beautiful smile and it looks very natural, which is the way cosmetic dentistry should be done.
